Arnside Knott & Waders at Leighton Moss Wednesday July 23rd We’ll visit these two sites in search of butterflies and returning freshwater waders. At Arnside we’ll particularly search for the nationally rare Scotch Argus that is relatively common here. There’s also a good chance of finding one or two Fritillary species, Wall Brown ( 2nd generation) and Small Copper as well as commoner species. At Leighton Moss there’s a good chance of Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Little Stint or Green Sandpiper with the possibility of something a little scarcer such as Spoonbill or Pectoral Sandpiper. |

The
Fylde Coast Monday July 28th Today will be spent looking for southbound migrating terns that will hopefully include Sandwich and Little at their coastal roosts along with Common and Arctic. There could also be a rarer species - both Roseate and Caspian Terns have turned up in these roosts in recent years. We’ll also look for White-letter Hairstreak and other butterflies and any other good birds that are currently in the area. It’s also a good time for migrating waders on the estuaries and this is when the Great Knot turned up on the Wyre a few years ago with White-rumped Sandpipers also featuring in recent times. |

Risley Moss & Pennington Flash Friday August 1st Our main target today will be Hobby at Risley. We shouldn’t have too many problems finding them hawking over the moss for dragonflies and other insects. We’ll also visit other nearby sites for the best birds around and these sites will include nearby Pennington Flash and Hope Carr Nature Reserve. |
Birding on The Fylde Wednesday August 13th We’ll spend today locally and will enjoy the best birds that are in and around the area on the day. If the weather is kind there’ll be opportunities to see butterflies such as Grayling and dragonflies too. The coast and freshwater wetlands are likely to be visited and we’ll probably look at Brockholes Quarry, Myerscough Quarry and Lightfoot Green amongst other sites. |
Lancaster Area Friday August 22nd We’ll spend today at various sites between Pilling and Leighton Moss and these could include the Conder Pool and Estuary, Morecambe, Heysham and Leighton Moss itself. There should be plenty of migratory gulls (Mediterranean and Little), terns and waders along with a good chance of a scarcer species too. |
Autumn Migration on The Fylde: part 1 Wednesday September 17th It’s an exceptionally busy time for birding along the coast right now with migration in full swing. From the north the waders and wildfowl are starting to arrive in numbers along with the first of the thrushes and other passerines. There could be unusual species to look for amongst the more common species on this first of two days studying migration along the Fylde Coast this autumn. |
Shorebird Identification Friday September 19th A day around the Ribble and Wyre Estuaries will be spent looking at the identification of waders. Most people find this group of birds really difficult to identify but it really doesn’t have to be so. We’ll show you how to sort them out by plumage, habitat, behaviour and size. There’ll also be other birding opportunities today. |

Spurn, East Yorkshire Wednesday September 24th If weather conditions, and in particular the wind direction, are favourable we could be in for a day to remember. Anything can turn up at Spurn in autumn when the wind is from the east and the peninsula has a huge list of rare and scarce birds on its list from this time of the year. Flycatchers, Warblers, Shrikes, Pipits, Wryneck, Bluethroat, Skuas, Buntings, Thrushes and much more can be expected. |
Bearded Tits and Bitterns Monday September 29th The day will start at Leighton Moss where Bearded Tits should be visiting the grit tables and therefore giving great views. We’ll also put time in to see Bitterns before leaving the area and heading inland into Bowland for more birding on the moors and in the riparian woodlands. |
Merseyside Wednesday October 1st Our birding today will be dictated by the weather. If conditions are favourable we’ll spend time at Crosby looking for Skuas and Leach’s Storm-petrels. Other options could include Marshside, Seaforth and Sefton. |
Autumn Migration on The Fylde: part 2 Monday October 6th Its only a couple of weeks since our last look at autumn migration but those few days and different weather patterns can make a huge difference to the range of species and number of birds that we’ll see. There’s every chance of an unusual bird or two today (maybe a scarce warbler or flycatcher) along with waders, geese and if the wind is anywhere near south westerly, seabirds such as Leach’s Storm-petrels. |
